Story of a Place

Assignment: students are asked to create an image telling the story of a place they have returned to in either dreams or fantasies. A sketch or model of this imagined space is collaged in Photoshop using only student-generated photographs, sketchbook studies, and small drawings. This model is then printed at 8.5 x 11, and enlarged into an 18 x 24 analog drawing by using a grid. 30 to 50% of the final drawing must be improvised or invented by the student so that it is not a simple copy of the print out.

Assignment: ‘Story of a Thing.’ Students are asked to create a digital, photo-based collage that tells the story of an object of personal importance to them. The primary Photoshop tools at use are Layer Masks, Layer Distortions like transparency and warping, and color filters. All the photographic input must be generated by the student (no found imagery or internet imagery). Students are encouraged to generate an extensive photo library and consider camera angle, lighting, and texture early on in the assignment.

This student’s object was a pair of glasses that were a gift from a family member.

This student’s object was a desktop mannequin. The student wished to create a project that was more of an emotional self-portrait, so he used the mannequin as a stand-in for himself and used the project to explore feelings of excitement, anxiety, and transition in moving very far away from home.
